Move over, coconut oil! Skin and hair products containing watermelon seed oil—specifically Kalahari melon oil—are the newest beauty craze. And for good reason. We already know the health benefits of eating watermelon seeds, but according to Tess Mauricio, M.D., a Beverly Hills–based dermatologist and founder of M Beauty Clinic, watermelon seed oil contains linolenic acid, “an omega-6 essential fatty acid that plays a vital role in maintaining healthy skin function and appearance. It also contains natural antioxidants and vitamins A, B, C, and E, which further hydrate and tighten the skin.” Kalahari melon in particular, she adds, known as “wild watermelon,” is not the typical refreshing watermelon that you eat at BBQs. “Kalahari melon comes from South Africa, has yellow or pale green peel, and a bitter taste,” explains Dr. Mauricio. “It acts as both a cleanser that unclogs pores and a natural moisturizer with anti-aging properties.” So, internally and externally, watermelon seed oil does the body (and hair!) good. Here, 15 products to start incorporating into your beauty routine.
