Q I’m about to have a hysterectomy, which will leave me in premature menopause. One of the side effects is likely to be more dry skin, with more lines and wrinkles, plus the inevitable hot flushes. Can you suggest some products?
A We send you our very best wishes for a speedy and smooth recovery. First, for the hot flushes, a little gizmo called FanU! A battery-powered fan, the size of an iPhone, that is helping many people cool down in this heat wave, including women going through menopause (Simon Cowell was spotted with one too so it’s unisex). We carry one in our handbags and have been known to pass it round in meetings. FanU Portable Fan, £9.99 in pink or white.
Productwise, we suggest adding extra skin-nourishing products. We love facial oils, always at night and often in the morning too. Our Beauty Bible testers gave a Gold Award to Trilogy CoQ10 Booster Oil, £31.50 for 20ml. You can read all the comments at beautybible.com, but, for example, one tester said: ‘Skin looks 100 per cent better, more radiant and even a bit youthful. Feels instantly hydrating and makes skin look so well moisturized, smooth and perfected.’
We are big fans of Temple Spa and Jo suggests Repose Aromatherapy Resting Cream, £40 for 50ml, a rich cocktail of botanicals, which really does give you a good night’s sleep in a jar, she says.
We also recommend Garden of Wisdom Hyaluronic Acid Serum, a lightweight product you can use morning and evening under moisturiser to plump out your complexion. A real Beauty Steal at just £9 for 30ml, from victoriahealth.com.
Sarah is impressed by Sanoflore, an organic range that is a bestseller in its native France and should be better known here. One hero product that really works is Sanoflore Essence Merveilleuse Regenerating Anti-Ageing Night Concentrate, £45 for 30ml.
Finally: VENeffect is a high end range, founded by two American sisters, Rebecca Booth, a gynaecologist and hormonal wellness expert, and Cecil, a skin care expert. The products are formulated with the specific aim of treating the signs of hormonal ageing. As oestrogen declines so do collagen and elastin, the skin matrix that gives it bounce and suppleness. VENeffect products are chockfull of carefully chosen plant oestrogens to put the bounce and glow back in your skin. Explore this investment option at spacenk.com, also available on Amazon.

Jo Malone London Lime, Basil & Mandarin Body & Hair Oil, £42 for 100ml. Lime, Basil & Mandarin has become one of the great modern classic fragrances, loved and worn and treasured by countless women (and men). And that includes us – happy to count ourselves among the long-term fans of the zesty, breezy, quintessential Cologne-y scent, which has such a wonderful cooling lime twist.
Unusually, this is one of the very few scents in our lives that we’re happy to smell as a candle and wear on the skin.
Jo Malone London Lime, Basil & Mandarin Body Hair Oil
On which note, we couldn’t be happier to be veiling ourselves in the new body oil version – a wonderful spritzable mist of those citrus and herbal notes, which has done double-duty during the recent hot weather: just smelling the scent itself is like sipping a long, cool drink of water, while the lightweight oil texture is great for countering the dryness of arms and legs that have experienced first-hand (or first-limn) plenty of the sun’s drying action, lately.
It’s also a great way to scent hair, adding a touch of condition – but without weighting it down or making it greasy.
The ultimate summer spritzer – but one which we reckon will be bringing a little ray of sunshine into darker days, later in the year.
